DMSIG – Mobile App Search
November 28, 2011 @ 6:30 pm
Event Details
Mobile app discovery, and specifically app search, is becoming a significant problem for both users and developers. However the app search problem is fundamentally different from web search; there is no link structure, and there is significantly less coherence between the way that app “documents” are written and the language users query an app search engine with. The solution to these problems involves the intersection of machine learning and information retrieval techniques, beyond traditional tfidf. We discuss the core challenges of app search, and explore how bag of words statistical methods like topic modeling can help solve them.
Speaker Bio
Cathy Edwards is an app search pioneer with expertise in machine learning, natural language processing and information retrieval technologies. In 2009 she co-founded mobile app search company Chomp, the leading mobile app search engine, and currently holds the position of CTO. Edwards created Chomp’s proprietary algorithm which understands the function of each app, allowing you to search for mobile apps based on what they do rather than what they’re called. Prior to Chomp, she held technical and product leadership positions at Telstra, Australia’s leading telecommunications carrier, and mobile startups 3jam and Friendster. Edwards holds degrees in pure mathematics, linguistics and computer science from the University of Western Australia.
