Event description:

In partnership with University of California Santa Cruz, Silicon Valley Extension (UCSC), SF Bay Area Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (SFBay ACM), is presenting an exciting evening of technology—from electronic design automation (EDA) with Synopsys CTO Antun Domic to native-cloud networking (NCN) with Netifi co-founder and CTO Ryland Degnan.

Antun Domic, chief technology officer at Synopsys, will be talking about New Trends in EDA. He’ll be joined by Ben Ting, Micron Technology engineer, an Extension instructor, and chair of the VLSI certificate program; Mandar Munishwar, Google engineer and Extension instructor; and Sam Huynh, principal member of technical staff at AMD and Extension instructor who will be talking about the skills people need to succeed in today’s job market. We’ll discuss the practical, technical, and business applications of these technologies, industry challenges and outlook, and how UCSC Extension can qualify you to meet the high-demand careers that are out there. Learn about the growing number of courses Extension offers in our certificate programs and how a thoughtfully structured, deep dive into our curriculum gives you the opportunity for hands-on project experience, as well as guided, live instruction.

One of new technologies presented at this event addresses the vast majority of enterprises are moving to the cloud, yet few are prepared for networking implications of cloud-native architectures. For developers, handling service discovery, fault tolerance, load balancing, caching and coordination over the network and across many services is the stuff of nightmares. For businesses, getting this wrong can be the cause of astronomical cloud costs and high-profile outages.

RSocket is an open-source network protocol developed in collaboration with Netflix, Facebook, Pivotal and others that was designed to handle the challenges of communication between complex networks of services both within the datacenter and over the internet – extending to mobile devices and browsers. In addition to ultra-low latency RPC and flexibility in the underlying transport layer, RSocket provides session resumption, application flow control and predictive load balancing to protect both client and server resources from being overwhelmed.

In this session, Ryland will discuss how RSocket can be used to simplify the way enterprises build and operate cloud-native applications, dramatically reducing operational overhead and speeding development velocity by allowing developers to focus on their product instead of their network infrastructure.

Speaker Bio:

Ryland Degnan is a co-founder and CTO of Netifi, where he is working to lay the groundwork for the next generation of cloud-native applications. Prior to Netifi, he was a member of the Netflix Edge Platform team that created RSocket, Hystrix and RxJava. He has over 12 years of experience building scalable distributed systems at organizations like Netflix, Skydeck, and Cisco. Ryland holds an AB from Harvard University and an MSc from the University of Oxford.
