Safety and Ethics for Advanced Autonomous Artificial Intelligences

As the action space range and the optimization power of autonomous agents grow over the years, researchers can foresee specific new challenges in making the future of AI what designers, customers, and society would like it to be. Topics covered include the types of emergent issues, technical research threads aimed at preventing or mitigating these issues (e.g. increasing contextual awareness, avoiding reward-gaming, safe exploration, establishing scalable control, computational deference, statistical-behavioral trust establishment, and many others), and the ethical, economic, and societal challenges that these systems will pose and what is being done about those.
Richard Mallah, Director of AI Projects at the Future of Life Institute, where he works to support the robust, safe, beneficent development of advanced artificial intelligence via metaresearch, research organization, analysis, policy engagement, and advocacy. Mr. Mallah also serves on the Executive Committee of IEEE’s initiative on autonomous systems ethics, is a chair of that IEEE initiative’s AGI committee, and serves as a senior advisor to the AI initiative of The Future Society at the Harvard Kennedy School. Richard is also Director of Advanced Analytics at Cambridge Semantics, Inc., where he heads R&D in AI including knowledge representation, computational linguistics, deep learning, conceptual middleware, and automated systems generation. At Cambridge Semantics, Mr. Mallah led creation of the highest-rated enterprise text analytics platform as per Forrester. Richard is also a board member at MarketMuse, the leading AI-driven enterprise content planning platform, and is an advisor at Astrocyte Research, which applies Bayesian knowledge graphs to understanding multilevel financial and economic time series. He is also an advisor to other startups and NGOs where he advises on AI, knowledge management, and sustainability.
